New Comics Wednesday (2/5/20)

Happy New Comics Wednesday!

Go here for a complete list of comics releasing this week.

My comics

  • DREAMING #18 – Awesome! Another Marguerite Sauvage drawn issue!
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE #40 – Looking forward to reading Venditti’s take on the Justice League.
  • MARTIAN MANHUNTER #12 – The end of the maxi-series. I have loved this mostly for the Riley Rosmo art.
  • STAR TREK YEAR FIVE TP VOL 01 ODYSSEYS END – Pick of the week – Despite the fact that Mike Johnson was replaced as the writer of IDW’s Star Trek comics (and from I read, unceremoniously), I’m looking forward to reading some TOS adventures.
  • MARKED #4

Other comics

  • DC CRIMES OF PASSION #1 – This is the first or second holiday themed special from DC that I didn’t order. I usually find one or two gems in these specials, not to mention new talent sometimes, but the last few from last year just didn’t do it for me.
  • ADLER #1 – I’m always interested in Sherlock Holmes stories and the spotlight is on Irene Adler, who, in some interpretations of the mythos is the superior intellect. I’m curious how this comic depicts the character.
  • WHY DID WE TRUST HIM TP – Shannon Wheeler is a singular wit and deserves some of your attention. This book is “a wide-ranging collection of single-panel comics. Relationships, social norms, language, animals, life and death are all targets of his elegant absurdity.”
  • X-MEN + FANTASTIC FOUR – I would normally ignore a title like this, but Chip Zdarsky is writing it, so who knows? It might be good.

Best comic I read recently

PEARL v2 by Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Gaydos, Joshua Reed, Dave Sharpe, Kevin Geiger, Curtis King Jr., Exotik Alek, and Diego Martin

pearl 8

This is such a gorgeous book: the line art, the colors, the tattoos, the backgrounds, and the alternate covers, like the Tula Lotay cover from issue 8 I’m spotlighting for you, are just top notch. The characters and situation (plot) are a bit simplistic and the dialog is peak Bendis, but still quite enjoyable. Definitely come for the fantastic art.

New Comics Wednesday (1/29/20)

Happy New Comics Wednesday!

Go here for a complete list of comics releasing this week.

My comics

  • ACTION COMICS #1019
  • GREEN LANTERN BLACKSTARS #3
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #19
  • CRIMINAL #12 – Pick of the week – How could it not be? It’s the last issue of the “Cruel Summer” arc. Hey, did you know you can read the first issue for free at Image Comics? https://imagecomics.com/read/criminal

Very light week for me, and not enough independent comic books.

Other comics

  • ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN JOSE LUIS GARCIA LOPEZ HC VOL 02 – Garcia Lopez’s work was the first art I was drawn to. I hope I can pick these hard covers up later (but soon)!
  • FAR SECTOR #1 – Buzz is that this book is great. I’ll be getting the trade.
  • SEX CRIMINALS #26 – The beginning of the end. I’m really curious if this series sticks the landing.
  • FANTASTIC FOUR GRAND DESIGN TP – I haven’t read any of the Grand Design books, but I want to eventually.
  • Post these under the title makes them sound like fun comics to read:
    • ALICE SECRET AGENT OF WONDERLAND YR GN
    • APOCALYPSE GIRL #1
  • GINSENG ROOTS #3 – I can’t wait to read the latest work by Craig Thompson in a collected format.
  • NILS TREE OF LIFE HC – I thought about getting this when it was solicited. Maybe down the road.

Best comic I read recently

IMMORTAL HULK: HULK IN HELL v3 by Al Ewing, Joe Bennet, Ruy Jose, Balardino Brabo, Rafael Fonteriz, Eric Nguyen, Kyle Hotz, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit

Immortal Hulk v3

Despite my love of the late 70s television series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno (did I ever tell you I met Ferrigno once at a car show in Spokane, Washington?), I do not care for the Hulk as a character. It just goes to show you that under artful hands, even mediocre IP can be part of a damn good story. Issues 11-13 especially were magnifique! I loved how everyone melded words and art in such a heartbreakingly beautiful way that transcended the sum of its parts and made me care for this dumb, green guy. I highly recommend this series.

New Comics Wednesday (1/22/20)

Happy New Comics Wednesday!

Go here for a complete list of comics releasing this week.

My comics

  • LUCIFER TP VOL 02 THE DIVINE TRAGEDY – The previous volume of the series was soooo good and I thought this would pale in comparison, but I was pleasantly surprised by the first trade.
  • SUPERMAN #19 – Not sure yet how I feel about the new status quo regarding Superman’s secret identity…
  • WONDER WOMAN #750 1980S VAR ED – Pick of the week! – I love landmark issues, and Wonder Woman deserves some spotlight. Of course I picked up the George Perez variant edition — why do you ask?
  • AGENTS OF ATLAS COMPLETE COLLECTION TP VOL 02 – The first collection was one of my favorite things I read in 2018, so I hope this is just as good.
  • INVISIBLE WOMAN TP – I love Sue Storm/Richards, and she’s being written by Mark Waid, so getting this was an easy choice.

Not much in my pull this week (which is probably a good thing).

Other comics

  • HUNTRESS ORIGINS TP – If you’re a fan of Helena Wayne as Huntress, here’s your chance to read her solo stories.
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 – I have to admit, I was curious what Donny Cates was going to do with these characters.
  • VALKYRIE JANE FOSTER TP VOL 01 – Do yourself a favor and get this trade, especially if you were a fan of the Jason Aaron written Thor/Lady Thor books.
  • A LETTER TO JO TP – I definitely will read this epistolary war comic one day.
  • CATHERINE’S WAR GN – I almost pulled the trigger on this, it looks like something I would enjoy very much.

Best comic I read recently

GRAVEYARD SHIFT TP by Jay Faerber and Fran Bueno

I usually steer clear of comic books featuring vampires — they’ve been done to death (like zombies)! But I love Jay Faerber’s comic book stories. Comixology had this on sale, so I snatched it up (along with some other of his books). There are many familiar tropes in this, but the charm of the characters keep it interesting. Bueno’s visuals aren’t consistently the best, but there are times when the characters (especially the female lead) shine of the page.

New Comics Wednesday (1/15/20)

Happy New Comics Wednesday!

Go here for a complete list of comics releasing this week.

My comics

  • FREEDOM FIGHTERS #12
  • LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #3
  • OVER MY DEAD BODY GN – A new Jay Faerber comic book!
  • UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY #3
  • VALKYRIE JANE FOSTER #7
  • FIVE YEARS #7
  • SECOND COMING #6 – Pick of the week! – I’m very curious how this story will end. The premise sounded interesting to me from the get-go (superhero taking Jesus under his wing at God’s request), then it was cancelled at DC Comics, and later it launched at Ahoy. It’s a strange comic in many ways, but that’s one reason I like it.

Interesting that I have two limited series ending and two #3 and #7 issues. I’m not a maths guy, but I love symmetry in numbers (and, really, everything else).

Other comics

  • HELLBOY WINTER SPECIAL 2019 – A part of me still wishes I’d ordered this.
  • CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS GIANT #1 – If this giant has “new” Crisis content, I am VERY curious what it is. I might have to keep an eye out for it at my local Wal-Mart and inspect the comic for, umm, defects or something.
  • LAZARUS TP VOL 06 – You can never go wrong with a Lazarus collection.
  • JESSICA JONES BLIND SPOT #1 – I have a soft spot for Jessica (I’m waiting for the trade).
  • THOR #1 – Considering the great Jason Aaron-written run that just ended was, I’m curious how this will go.
  • COURTNEY CRUMRIN TP VOL 06 THE FINAL SPELL – I’ve only read the first volume (so far), but I quite enjoyed it to the point that I’m keeping an eye out for new content all these years later.

Best comic I read recently

BATMAN #85 by King, Janin, Petrus, Bellaire, Cowles, Daniel, Morey, Wielgosz, Meares, and Rich

Batman85

The end of the Tom King-written Batman run. I have loved this King run from day 1! Add artistic collaborators Janin and Mann (and others) and we got a delicious helping of Batman comics! It hasn’t been all fantastic — King sometimes overwrite and can be didactic, but he helped create a unique vision of the Batman that we haven’t seen before, at least not to this extent. I’m definitely looking forward to the Batman/Catwoman limited series from King and Mann.

New Comics Wednesday 7/29/15

Here are the comics that I’m getting from this week:

  • BATGIRL ANNUAL #3: Grayson guest stars! I had to get it!
  • LAZARUS #18
  • SEX CRIMINALS #11
  • DAREDEVIL #17: I’m going to miss this run.
  • POWERS #4
  • THORS #2: This is runner up for Pick of the Week based on how good issue 1 was.
  • SCARLETT COUTURE #4: Ugh. If there was a category for Comic I’m Dreading Reading, this would be it. I had such high hopes for this series.
  • STAR TREK STARSHIPS FIG MAG #46 ENTERPRISE NCC-1701C

Pick of the Week: Honestly? I’m most looking forward to getting that Star Trek magazine and the Enterprice-C figure. Besides the refit Enterprise (and Enterprise-A), the C version is my favorite design, and one that we didn’t see enough in Next Gen and the movies.

Best Cover: Sex Criminals #11 by Chip Zdarsky. If you haven’t caught on, I seem to be drawn to colors and shapes on comic book covers. Yes, all covers have colors and shapes, but I’m referring to things like this cover, where there are few defining characteristics and yet, those simple colors and shapes work to convey an idea. There is a reason for the old adage “less is more”.

Here’s a list of new comics for this week. What are you buying?

PS: This is the final New Comics Wednesday post for the foreseeable future. Not that many people read the blog as it is, and these posts get the least amount of traffic. If you really like these posts, let me know, and I may be persuaded to bring them back. Thanks for reading!
