New Comics Wednesday 7/9/14

Happy New Comics Wednesday! Here are the comics that I’ll be getting from this week, plus the best comic I read recently.

New Comics this week

  • ALL-NEW X-MEN #29
  • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1.3
  • AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE #4
  • AVENGERS #32
  • BATMAN ETERNAL #14
  • COFFIN HILL #9: Damn, that cover looks so good. I discuss what a good comic this is in an upcoming podcast episode.
  • DAREDEVIL #5
  • DETECTIVE COMICS #33
  • GRAYSON #1: It’s a Dick Grayson centric comic, how could I not buy it? It’s been getting some positive advance press, so here’s hoping.
  • INFINITY MAN AND THE FOREVER PEOPLE #2
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #3
  • NEW 52 FUTURES END #10
  • ROYALS: MASTERS OF WAR #6: The last issue of this interesting premise. I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of the potential of this title. I hope we can have some sequels.
  • STAR TREK #35: I love Q as much as any Star Trek fan, but do we really need to dip into that well with the reboot Trek?
  • SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #10
  • WORLDS’ FINEST #25

Go here for a complete list of comics releasing this week.

Best Comic I Read Recently

Batman and Ra’s Al Ghul #32 by Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, & Mick Gray

I just love the moodiness that the creators bring to this title, and it very much is a collaboration between all three that I rarely take notice of in comics (because it isn’t there, and not just because I’m oblivious). At one point, after Batman retrieves Damian’s body from Ra’s and the villain strolls towards the dark knight, threatening him and his extended family, Batman turns to Ra’s (in a splash page close up of their faces) and tells him, “..if you try to take to take Damian’s body again I’m going to kill you and make sure you never come back.” Ra’s tells Batman that he believes him, and a brutal fight ensues only to be broken up by the interesting arrival of someone from Apokolips. This is such a good comic, and the best Batman book being published right now. I will also talk about this issue in an upcoming podcast episode.

Runner Up: Letter 44 #7. I think I enjoyed this so much because we get a lot of information about the past of some of the crew members of the Clarke, especially Charlotte. What she goes through before she sets out on that voyage is depicted with such emotion and pathos. I just really enjoyed reading this flashback tale, maybe even more than the first six issues so far.

Podcast Episode 59: We’re Number 1s!

After I chat a bit about the Captain Comics comic book shop I visited in November, I talk about the following comics that I read:

  • Letter 44 #1
  • Velvet #1
  • Sandman Overture #1
