This episode I talk about the two (count ’em 2!) vacations I went on this year. First, a joint birthday gift trip my wife and I gave each other: a week in Scotland! Then, a week in Boise for my granddaughter’s birthday and a few days on the Oregon coast with the family. Plus, what I read while in the car, watched after we returned, and some other tidbits along the way.

Back in August, 2014, I was challenged by Peter Rios to donate to the Hero Initiate in honor of Jack Kirby’s birthday. If you don’t know what the Hero Initiative is (or maybe you’ve forgotten), I’ll let the official website explain:
The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.
So there you go. This is a way for us fans, those of us who have gotten so much out of reading comic books, to provide a little something for those creators who need some assistance. That’s not a whole lot to ask now is it? Spoilers! No, it isn’t, and so I will be donating again this year.
Now it’s your turn. If you’re reading this, I challenge you to donate at least $25 to the Hero Initiative and ask others to step up. In the comics, the hero would help you when you needed it; now it’s your turn to be the hero! Take the pledge today!
