RandoMonday: Hawkeye #3 (1983)

Here’s a comic chosen at random from my collection.

Cover by Gruenwald and Layton

I swear, this is totally a random pick (I use random.org to pick the numbers), but it is serendipitous that an issue of this mini-series from 1983 was chosen considering the popularity of the newest Hawkeye series by Matt Fraction and company.

This third issue (of four) is basically one long chase and fight scene as Hawkeye and Mockingbird tussle with Bombshell and Oddball who, according to comicbookdb.com, make their Marvel U debut in this issue. In the end, Hawkeye and Mockingbird get captured for the final showdown in the next issue.

This series always impressed me for a couple reasons: 1) the modified Hawkeye costume that was made for him by Mockingbird (within two hours no less!), 2) the beginning of the Hawkeye/Mockingbird relationship, and 3) Hawkeye’s hearing loss, which was probably the first time that I saw in comics where a superhero’s adventures had a lasting impact on him/her physically. Of course, I think everyone’s forgot about this tidbit, or maybe Clint’s hearing got better when he was resurrected from the dead. This mini still ranks up there as one of my favorites of the time.
