Podcast Episode 37: Breaking Late News

Here’s another breaking late news episode wherein we talk about some various comic book related news bits, including:

  • Disney’s ownership of Star Wars
  • Fearless Defenders
  • The lack of excitement in general regarding the Marvel NOW! initiative
  • DC’s expansion of its digital comics distribution
  • A possible Justice League Dark movie
  • JLA state variant covers
  • Jeff Lemire on Green Arrow and Keith Giffen’s return to LSH
  • Finally, Hellblazer ends its long run at #300 (that’s a doozy!)

Lemire promised a return to classic Green Arrow, believing that this would help bring back disillusioned fans back to the character. This is exactly what the character needed: a good writer recreating him from head to toe, and giving us back the old Oliver we used to love.
I complained about the New 52 version of Green Arrow on every blog I could find, and all the other fans of the character were unsatisfied as well, so I knew that DC couldn’t ignore us forever, and was going to making him mature once again.
Also, notice that Lemire will go on working with a penciller having a creepy style: after Foreman and Pugh, we’ll see him teaming up with Sorrentino. This is a good thing, because creepy art perfectly ties with his delightfully weird style of writing.
I hope Lemire won’t leave Animal Man, because no one could write it as well as him. The relationship between Animal Man and Lemire is like the one between Johns and Aquaman: when the writer leaves the series, it will never be the same.

I hope Travis will comment on this since I don’t read Green Arrow, but I understand what you’re saying about the special quality some writers bring to certain characters.

Thanks for commenting wwayne. I am very much looking forward to the Lemire Green Arrow, at minimum it will recapture some of the old flavor of the character back when Mike Grell was writing the Long Bow Hunter series and that is a huge step in the right direction for the character. The 52 reboot of Green Arrow has been nothing but a disaster so they can only go up. I’ve read some articles on CBR with Lemire talking about Green Arrow and where his view of what Green Arrow represents and mine do not match up in a lot of ways I do think he will take the character in an exceptable and readable directions. And the art should be crazy good with Sorrentino on it! :)

Great episode guys! Although your lack of fan boy obsession over Star Wars knocks you a couple ticks down on my “Geek-O-Meter.” ;-)

Fear Itself: The Fearless is a MUST read for any Valkyrie fan. Sure, the story has the hammers from the event but the main focus of the book is Valkyrie and adding depth to her character.

Thanks James! And I don’t know, I think the Star Wars prequels knocked every SW fan down a bit. ;)
