New Comics Wednesday (5/18/11)

I’ll be heading to the Spokane Comicon this Saturday with my younger, but certainly not handsomer, brother. He was never into comics like I was and continue to be, so it should be mildly interesting to see his reactions to things. You may recall the review I wrote about the Con last year, so I’ll be curious to see if things have improved.

Here’s what’s coming out this week that I’ll be getting:

  • Batman & Robin #23
  • JLA #57
  • LSH #13
  • Sigil #3
  • Teen Titans #95
  • Zatanna #13

Also, Alpha Flight #0.1 (no, that’s not a typo) is out, beginning a seven-issue limited series featuring our favorite Canadian heroes (though I guess it’s technically eight with this point one issue).

On the DC side, the Batgirl: The Flood trade is being published. I went back and got all the floppies, but if you haven’t read the Bryan Q. Miller (of Smallville) written Batgirl, you really should check it out.

Batman: Gates of Gotham: The description from the DC website intrigues me a bit in that it “sets the stage for several exciting storylines in 2011”, but I have a doubt about how good this is really going to be.

Finally, I really want to get the Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes: The Early Years trade. It collects Adventure Comics #515-520, with the return of Paul Levitz writing the Legion, and right after I removed the title from my pull list (for monetary reasons). I’d like to see how this “new” Legion’s history with a young Superman is represented.

Why do you doubt Gates of Gotham? Everything that Synder has been writing has been spun of gold. American Vampire is all the buzz and I think his run on Detective Comics will end up being listed as icon Batman stories when it’s all said and done. I’m a Batman, Gotham, Synder, Cassandra Cain fan so I’ll be picking it up for sure.

Not sure if I’m picking up Alpha Flight #0.1 but I’m getting the rest of the mini because I have great memories of the book in the beginning, we’ll see if these guys can hold a candle to Byrne.

I have doubts because of the promise from the ad copy, and when was the last time a mini series created exciting, cool stuff in the main books?

The Return of Bruce Wayne mini series I’d say was pretty big.
