SDCC News Bits

So far, the only bits of news I’ve read coming out of the San Diego Comic-Con that are sticking with me are from DC:

  • Batman, Inc.–Grant Morrison continuing on with a Batman title. And did I read somewhere that this will be the Batman team-up book, like the old Brave and the Bold? One can hope….
  • Flash: Speed Force–Wally West is back (and some other speedsters)! That alone intrigues me.
  • A new Who’s Who!–‘Nuff said.

More to come, I’m sure.

Whoa, whoa whoa! I *never* said he could ever, *ever* be the goddamn Batman. Bruce will always be The Batman. Dick, Dick is Batman. There is a difference you know.

Batman Inc. Morrison is quoted as saying that he loves the Brave and the Bold cartoon and this title will give him the ability to do some team ups. The team up thing is cool. Franchising Batman so both Bruce and Dick are Batman. This, this could be genius and am very much looking forward to two Batmans in a single title kicking the hell out of things! Of course now I’m questioning which Batman will be in which title. Of course Dick will be in Batman and Robin because Morrison is also quoted as saying Dicks the only one that can really handle Daiman. But who is going to be the “master” detective in Detective comics? Who will be in Batman? Batman Inc? the Dark Knight? I may have to actually invest in Dick being a Batman now instead of looking at him as a temperary fit. As I said, could be genius and I’m looking forward to it.

I love the idea of Dick continuing as a Batman, but I really don’t see this sticking around for long, if indeed that’s what they are planning. It would go against everything that character has been about for last 25 or so years–but hey! Why should I dwell on the past? ;-)

It’s pretty exciting time for DC Comics, yes?

Everything that Dick has been about? Really? So he has been about being anything but Batman for the last 25 years? If that’s the case all the writers messed up and they should have been him taking the mantle even more painful and he should be fighting with it every day I’d think. Seems to me that he’s really starting to enjoy being “the Batman”.

Yes, he’s transitioned into enjoying it because that’s what he’s accepted as his duty and he’s making the most of it. But even as recently as Battle for the Cowl Dick was struggling with the decision to inhabit the uniform. Plus, the last 25-30 years has been about how different Dick is than Bruce and that he couldn’t really be the goddamn Batman. So, yeah, despite recent events, it goes against established character. Plus, when Bruce gets back, I think Dick’s first response would be to gladly hand back the uniform and go back to being Nightwing. It will take some convincing on Bruce’s part to keep Dick in the cowl, IF they’re writing Dick as he’s been shown for almost as long as I’ve been reading the character.
